When I'm eating jokbal on the Gangnam side, this is the place I think of first. It's Yeongdong Jokbal, in Yangjae.

Springy skin, tender meat — that's the reason

Of all the jokbal I've had around Gangnam, this was the best. Going back after a long gap, the impression held.

  • The skin is springy
  • The meat is fall-apart tender

Both textures are there in one slice. It's braised without any gamey edge, and the seasoning isn't heavy. Wrapping it in lettuce, you end up ordering another plate.

What it looks like

A large white plate comes piled with jokbal. Thin slices of glossy brown skin, lean meat and the part with the bone attached are stacked together. Beside it sit a plate of red-leaf lettuce, garlic, a small dish of red wrap seasoning, seasoned shredded radish and white water kimchi, with a bean-sprout soup alongside. The whole spread is set up for wrapping.

For foreign visitors

  • The jokbal itself is not spicy. The salted-shrimp and soybean-paste dips and the seasoned side dishes carry a little heat, but you can leave them out.
  • Jokbal is pig's leg braised in soy sauce and spices, then thinly sliced. It has almost no smell — it's a dish you eat for the texture.
  • Put meat, garlic and dipping paste on a lettuce leaf and wrap it by hand.
  • It comes in small, medium and large. Small to medium for two; medium to large for three or four.

Who this suits

  • ✅ You want a proper plate of jokbal during a Gangnam / Seocho itinerary
  • ✅ You like the springy-skin texture
  • ✅ You can't eat spicy food — jokbal isn't spicy
  • ⚠️ You dislike strong soy-and-cinnamon spice aromas — though this place is on the milder side
  • ⚠️ You want to sit down immediately at peak times — you may have to walk to an annex

Before you go

There are several annex branches near the main one. At busy times the main branch fills up and you may be sent to a nearby annex, so check which branch you're heading to on the map.

  • Check the branch — there are several annexes besides the main one. See which branch on the map.
  • Hours · prices · closing day — closed every Sunday (as of Aug 2026). Exact hours and prices vary between the main branch and its annexes, though, so check which branch you're at and confirm via map or phone.
  • Ordering — pick small, medium or large. Small or medium for two.
  • Another meal in Gangnam — craving something spicy and brothy instead, Daewoo Budae-jjigae is another option in the same Gangnam area.
Written up after eating there myself. Impressions of taste and texture can vary from person to person. The closing day is Sunday; exact hours and prices vary by branch — check the venue's details once more before you go. Prices and hours are (as of Aug 2026).
