This is Hamdeok Beach on Jeju's northeast coast. The sea really is a lovely emerald color.

Save places to build a route

It's fairly touristy now

With so many places to stay nearby, it feels fairly touristy these days. The terrace building jutting out toward the water in the photo below is a cafe too (Cafe Delmoondo).

What it looks like

People walk sparsely across a wide open ground, with palm trees lined up on the left. White letters reading "Ham deok" are painted on the stone wall in the middle, and far to the right, a two-story cafe building stands by the water. The sky is blue with thin clouds stretched across it, and the slanting light draws long shadows from the people. It is a view where the plaza-like space catches the eye before the sea does.

Seowubong is right there for a walk

Seowubong is right next to the beach, so it's easy to keep walking after you've looked at the sea.

People on month-long stays

I saw quite a few Koreans and foreigners doing month-long stays here. There's a lot of accommodation, and the beach, cafes, and walking paths are all close together, so it seems like a place people settle into. It's on my own list of places I'd like to try a month-long stay someday.

The size of the beach and getting there

Hamdeok Beach is a wide stretch of sand — roughly 900 m long and 120 m wide. It lies about 20 km east of Jeju International Airport, easy to reach by rental car or bus, and there are several free public parking lots around the beach (they can fill up around lunchtime). The water is shallow and gently sloping, which is part of why the emerald color shows so well.

A meal in the same neighborhood

If you are choosing a meal near the beach, there is Hamdeok Golmok, a haejangguk (hangover soup) shop that moved from Hamdeok to a new building in Jocheon. It opens at 7 AM and closes at 1:30 PM, so it fits well after a morning walk.

For foreign visitors

  • Hamdeok is the name of a village on Jeju's northeast coast (administratively Jocheon-eup, Jeju City), and the beach takes its name from it
  • An oreum is one of the small volcanic hills scattered across Jeju. Seowubong is one of them, and being right next to the beach it makes an easy, light walk
  • Swimming is safest during the official beach season. At other times, stick to walking and enjoying the scenery

Who this is for

  • ✅ Anyone who wants to walk along Jeju's emerald water
  • ✅ Anyone who wants to pair a beach stroll with a walk up Seowubong
  • ✅ Anyone researching a Jeju month-long stay who wants to get a feel for the place
  • ⚠️ If you're expecting a quiet, empty beach — with so many cafes and places to stay, it has a touristy feel
  • ⚠️ If swimming is the goal, check the official beach season dates
This is a first-hand account, and impressions of the scenery are subjective. Hours and facilities are (as of Oct 2026) — worth checking again before you go.
