Ganghwa-do Matjip Charcoal Grilled FishA Grilled-Fish Set Right at the Island's Gateway
It's a place right where you cross onto Ganghwa Island. I wanted grilled fish, and a simple lunch, so I stopped in.

Several kinds of fish, grilled to a precise doneness
Cross the Ganghwa or Choji bridge onto the island and it comes up before long. A good spot for a first meal when you're starting a Ganghwa day from Seoul or Gimpo.
Order the grilled-fish set and several kinds of fish come out together — big cuts like Spanish mackerel, and smaller whole fish such as baendaengi (a small silvery herring-like fish) and gizzard shad. Ganghwa is, in fact, known for baendaengi.
The point is the grilling. It's done over charcoal in the kitchen, and the doneness is exact — crisp outside, moist inside, cooked through without a burnt taste. It had been a while since I'd said out loud that grilled fish was good.
The shop's own window is plastered with big photos of the grilled fish, so you know exactly what they serve before you even walk in.

What it looks like
Three fish are grilling on a round wire rack. The long fish in the middle has dark stripes on its body and a well-browned skin, while the upper and lower fish are silver-bodied with grill marks spreading across them. On the oval plate above, three already-grilled pieces lie head and all, their skin scorched dark brown, with the bone cross-sections visible. On the right you can see part of a stainless lid and bowl.
Menu words
- Saengseon-gui is fish grilled whole or in pieces
- Jeongsik is a set meal where a main dish comes with rice, soup and several side dishes
- Charcoal-grilled means cooked directly over charcoal, which gives a smoky aroma
The set isn't cheap, but
Honestly, for a simple lunch the set isn't cheap. But once I'd finished, I didn't feel the money was wasted. Given the number of fish and the skill of the grilling, it made sense.
The side dishes aren't laid out lavishly. But each one was decent. If you like grilled fish, this will be a satisfying meal.
What foreign visitors should know
- Saengseon-gui is fish grilled plain. Here it's over charcoal, and several kinds arrive at once as a set. It is not spicy.
- Small fish (baendaengi, gizzard shad) are sometimes eaten bones and head included. If that's off-putting, just pick the flesh.
- If you're not used to picking fish off the bone, it takes a while. This isn't a place for a rushed meal.
- Ganghwa is an island, so a car makes getting around much easier. By public transport from Seoul, take a Ganghwa-bound bus from Hapjeong or Sinchon (around 1.5 hours).
- Bear in mind it costs a bit more than a "quick lunch."
- ✅ Good if you like grilled fish, need a spot for a first meal as you start a Ganghwa itinerary, or want a plain, clean Korean spread rather than bold flavours
- ⚠️ Reconsider if you're expecting a very cheap lunch, or you find picking fish off the bone a chore
Before you go
- Getting there — Ganghwa-gun, Incheon, right at the island entrance. It's the stretch just over the bridge, so check the name on the map before you go.
- Ordering — the grilled-fish set is the basic. Order per person and several fish come on one table.
- Hours · prices · closing day — Daily 09:00–21:00, grilled-fish set (per person) from ₩18,000, and no regular closing day (as of Sep 2026). Still worth confirming on the map or by phone before you go.
- Elsewhere in Incheon — Paradise City Cimer out on Yeongjong Island is technically the same city, but far enough from Ganghwa that it's a separate trip.
- Pairing it up on Ganghwa — Donmak Beach over in Hwado-myeon is also on Ganghwa Island — worth combining into one day if the weather's good.
