Donmak BeachGanghwa Island's Best-Known Beach, and You Can Camp There
Ganghwa Island is somewhere I drive out to now and then. Donmak Beach is the one I usually end up stopping at — it is still, by a fair margin, the best-known beach on the island.

Changed a fair bit, but still worth it
Over the years this stretch has visibly developed — more cafes, a more finished feel than I remember. It hasn't lost its old character entirely, though, and it is still a good spot to stop for a change of scenery.
A wooden boardwalk runs through the pine trees straight down to the sand and the water. It's an easy, well-kept walk in — no real effort involved.

What it looks like
This is the beach on a day when the water has gone far out. In front, golden sand spreads wide, with several large three-dimensional letter sculptures standing on it. Each letter looks a different texture, like dark brown, grey and green marble. Beyond the sand, a muddy tidal flat stretches almost to the horizon, with people standing tiny on it. At the far right, a wooded hill extends, and the sky is hazy and overcast.
High tide, low tide, mudflat
This is a West Sea beach, so the scenery shifts completely with the tide. At high tide it's an ordinary beach. At low tide, the mudflat stretches out for a long way. Various creatures live in it, but collecting anything is banned to protect the ecosystem — look, don't take.
Large "Donmak" block letters stand on the sand. There's no mistaking where you are, and it's a solid photo spot — the mudflat and sea fill the frame behind it.
You can pitch a tent here
One practical thing worth knowing — there's a campground in the pine woods behind the beach, and for a modest site fee you can pitch a tent and stay the night. Deck sites run around 25,000 won a night, ground sites around 20,000, with hourly rates too. Parking is 2,000 won.
So it works either as a quick day drive or as a spot to camp overnight if you bring a tent.
Good to know
- Donmak Beach is on the south side of Ganghwa Island, the island's best-known stretch of sand.
- Swimming is summer-only. Outside that window it's mostly a walking, photo, and mudflat-watching spot.
- Whatever you see in the mudflat at low tide, look but don't collect — it's protected.
- The pine-woods campground lets you camp for a site fee — bring your own tent.
- Ganghwa is much easier by car than by public transit, though buses to Ganghwa run from Hapjeong and Sinchon in Seoul.
Before you go
- Location — 1481 Haeannam-ro, Hwado-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon. On the south side of the island; a car makes this much easier.
- Parking / fees — Parking is 2,000 won. Camping runs roughly 25,000 won/night for a deck site, 20,000 for ground (hourly rates also available).
- Season — Swimming runs July 3 – October 31, 2026. Outside that window, only the beach and walking paths are open.
- Pairing it up — If you need food near the island's entrance, Ganghwa-do Matjip Charcoal Grilled Fish is also on Ganghwa Island — though it's a bit of a drive from Hwado-myeon, so check the route before pairing them in one trip.
