Sokcho BeachThe ㅅㅊ Sculpture, the Sokcho Eye, and a Fixed Point on a Gangwon Trip

It's a place I stop at, almost every time, even briefly, whenever I'm in Gangwon. This time too, I pulled over on the way past.

The same every time, and that's the appeal

It's not somewhere you come to do anything in particular. You walk a loop of the plaza, put your feet in the sand for a bit, look at the sea, and leave. And still — one visit here lifts the mood. It's the kind of spot that makes it feel like you're actually on a trip.

The surroundings always greet you the same way: the paved stone plaza, the palm trees, the breakwater, the sea in front of it. Nothing much changes, and that sameness is itself part of why it's easy to be here.

A large ㅅㅊ sculpture stands in front of the sand. That alone will tell a lot of people where this is (ㅅ and ㅊ are the first consonants of "Sokcho" in Korean). If you're still not sure — one more hint: once you see the ferris wheel beside the beach, there's no mistaking it. This is Sokcho Beach. Next to the sculpture there's a frame-shaped photo spot that catches Jodo islet inside it, and a #SokchoTrip sign. People take turns standing there for photos.

The Sokcho Eye and around the beach

The Sokcho Eye ferris wheel beside the beach, with a building of cafes and a bakery — Sokcho Beach

Right beside the beach is the Sokcho Eye ferris wheel. By day, the white frame with its coloured capsules turning photographs well; in the evening it lights up.

The lower floors of the building it stands on hold coffee, bakery, beer and ice cream shops — you'll see names like "Sokcho Sand" (속초샌드) and "Cafe Whale Light" (카페 웨일라잇) on the signs. It's a good spot to duck into for a coffee while walking the beach.

The beach itself is only open for swimming during the summer season; the rest of the year you're mostly here for the plaza, the promenade, and the photo spots.

What it looks like

Under an overcast sky, a wide stone plaza leads toward the beach. Dark lines on the plaza floor trace concentric circles and curves, and a large planter with pink flowers sits in the foreground. On the sand stand three-dimensional "#속초여행" letters, an information structure with a character and a sunrise photo inside a square frame, and a white letter sculpture. Beyond them in the sea stand green and yellow buoy-type lighthouses, and in the distance to the right is a banner about the beach's closed period. A palm-shaped decoration stands on the left.
