Little DinerAn Analog Diner Brunch in Gangneung, and a Pancake-Bun Burger

I got into Gangneung the evening before. I hadn't had much to drink, so I could start the next morning at an easy pace. I decided on a late brunch, and the place I picked was Little Diner.

The bun alone sets it apart: a pancake of a burger

The thing I ordered was the burger. What catches your eye first is the bun. Not a regular hamburger bun — a thick, golden, griddled bun that looks like a pancake sits on top. Below it are lettuce, cheddar, and layers of smoked meat that look like pastrami and bacon.

On the side come fries, ketchup, and a small jug of syrup. Drizzle a little syrup over the pancake bun and the salty meat meets the sweetness — that overlap is what makes it feel like brunch. Pickled onions and jalapeños arrive in a glass jar and cut the richness.

The other plate we ordered came sliced into triangles like a quesadilla or panini, with a single onion ring on top. Splitting the two plates was just the right amount for a morning meal.

The first meal in a new place sets the mood for the day. I wanted to start light but solid, and Little Diner fit that "start the day well" idea from the moment we walked in.

What it looks like

On a white plate sits a burger with a pancake bun. The top bun is a thick pancake browned golden, with bacon, cheese and lettuce visible beneath it. Beside the plate are fries, ketchup in a yellow dish, and a small white pitcher-like container. Behind it you can see a plate of toasted sandwiches with a sauce dish, a jar of pickles, and a bottle of Budweiser standing at the left.

Menu words

  • A pancake burger is a burger in which a thick pancake takes the place of the bun
  • A diner is an American-style casual restaurant that serves burgers, sandwiches, pancakes and the like

An analog American diner — the space is half of it

The interior of Little Diner, done up with red diner chairs and pop-art banners — Gangneung

Half of this place is the atmosphere. Orange enamel pendant lamps hang from a bare concrete ceiling, and the seats are red vinyl diner chairs at chrome-edged white tables. Over the kitchen window there's a red "DINER" sign.

The walls are filled with old American things: pop-art chimpanzee banners, a Kurt Cobain poster, a beat-up upright piano covered in colorful graffiti. There's a shared-seating notice on the counter. It looks like a well-built set, but it never tips into too much — "analog" is exactly the right word for it.

Sitting in a room like this for brunch, on a trip, lifts the mood of the whole day on its own. Little Diner was a good place to start a Gangneung trip from.

What foreign visitors should know

  • It's a brunch / diner style place. The menu is burgers, pancakes, egg dishes — close to a Western breakfast. An easy choice on a morning when Korean food feels like too much.
  • The signature burger's bun is thick, like a pancake. Pouring the syrup from the small jug over the bun is the house way to eat it.
  • Not spicy. Pickled jalapeños come on the side, but you can leave them off.
  • Gangneung is about two hours from Seoul by KTX. It works well as a next-morning stop after you arrive.
  • I didn't check whether there's an English menu. If the menu has photos, pointing works fine.
  • ✅ Good if you want to start the first morning of a Gangneung trip light and in a good mood, you like analog/retro spaces, or Korean food and soup in the morning feels like too much
  • ⚠️ Less good if you want a quiet, tidy atmosphere, or just want to grab a quick meal — it's heavily decorated, can get busy, and suits a slower pace
