Where Hyeongjeseom appears, Sanbangsan is on your left

Once you pass Songaksan, you'll see two small islands joined together in the sea. Because they're joined, they're called the "brother islands."

Hyeongjeseom — two small islands joined in the sea, beyond black basalt rocks on the shore

Around where you can see Hyeongjeseom, look inland to your left and there's Sanbangsan rising up. It's the landmark peak of this stretch. It feels good no matter when you drive it. Clear or overcast, the sea, the islands and the mountain's outline all read differently.

What it looks like

Sanbangsan rises to the left of the road that curves along the coast. The mountain has a rounded top and sheer rock cliffs on its flank, with big clouds hanging low above it. To the right of the road, the sea and a breakwater continue, with a red lighthouse and harbor buildings in the distance. By the roadside stand a wooden sign reading "HEY BROTHER CAFE&PUB" and what looks like a cafe building. It is near sunset, and the underside of the clouds is tinted yellow.

What you pass

The coastal road from Moseulpo Harbour toward Seogwipo is genuinely beautiful. Even with no set destination, it's a stretch where the road itself is the point.

  • Moseulpo Harbour — you can catch the boat to Gapado here. Check sailing times and cancellations on the day.
  • Songaksan — there's a well-made walking loop around it. The grade is gentle, so it's an easy walk.
  • Hyeongjeseom and Sanbangsan — as above, the highlight of this stretch.

For foreign visitors

  • This stretch is meant to be driven — a rental car. Buses reach the individual points (Songaksan, Sanbangsan), but the "driving the stretch" experience needs a car.
  • The Songaksan loop is gentle, more a stroll. At Sanbangsan you climb stairs to the Sanbanggulsa cliff temple partway up (the full summit is restricted).
  • Gapado is reachable only by boat. It's known for its green-barley fields in spring, but sailings are frequently affected by weather — check on the day.
  • The shoreline rocks and basalt are slippery. Wear comfortable shoes.

Who this suits

  • ✅ You have a rental-car west-Jeju itinerary
  • ✅ You enjoy the road and the scenery more than the destination
  • ✅ You want to combine a Songaksan walk and a Sanbangsan viewpoint in one day
  • ✅ You plan to take the boat to Gapado from Moseulpo
  • ⚠️ You're relying on public transport — you can reach the points, but not the "drive"
  • ⚠️ You just tick off fixed sights and move on — this post is about a road you take slowly

Before you go

  • Route — Moseulpo Harbour → Songaksan → Hyeongjeseom viewpoint → Sanbangsan, continuing toward Seogwipo. It's just as good in the other direction.
  • Gapado boat — departs from Moseulpo Harbour. Check times, fares and cancellations on the day.
  • Sanbangsan / Songaksan — check admission and which sections are open before you go.
  • Eat — Jeju Halmang Bapsang Moseulpo, right in front of the harbour, sits perfectly at either end of this stretch.
Written after driving this road myself. Boat services and which viewpoints are open can change, so it's worth checking again before you go. Fees and hours are (as of Aug 2026).
