This is about a day spent walking on Geoje, a large island off Korea's south coast.

Walking Geoje Island — The Road Between the Famous Places Was the Better Part

Save places to build a route

The famous spot is busy — start there

Being straight with you first. Windy Hill is very crowded.

In the photo you can see the line of people along the ridge by the windmill. It's a good place. It is not a place to look at the sea alone in silence.

Dojangpo harbour with the Windy Hill windmill above it, and the Haegeumgang cruise boats moored

Everyone comes for the windmill, then the scenery. That tells you exactly what people come for.

What I remember is the road in between

The part that stayed with me wasn't the landmark. It was the walking between landmarks.

Sea strung with aquaculture floats, layered islands on the horizon

There was nobody on this stretch. A line of aquaculture floats, one boat drawing a white seam across the water, islands stacked in layers behind each other. That's all of it.

Standing there alone, time slows down. Every moment I actually remember from Geoje was a place like this — unnamed, no car park, no sign pointing at it.

It's an island where people work

Before it is a tourist destination, Geoje is an island that lives on the sea. Walking, you keep seeing that.

Someone bent over the tidal rocks at low tide, gathering something

At low tide one person is bent over the exposed rocks, working between stones furred with green seaweed, digging something out. This isn't scenery arranged for visitors. It's somebody's day.

A bay full of aquaculture rafts, with the harbour village behind

Inside the bay, farming rafts float in rows; behind them the village, the breakwater, a red lighthouse. This is Geoje's default view — and I think it explains the island better than the windmill does.

So, how to use the place

  • Treat Windy Hill as a destination, but don't let arriving be the goal. Drive to the car park, take the photo, leave — and you've seen half of it
  • Leave a stretch to walk. The good places show up on the roads linking the coast to the villages
  • Early morning or late afternoon is better. Fewer people, and much better light

You can also take a boat

Cruises leave Dojangpo harbour for Oedo and Haegeumgang — those are the white boats moored in the photo. Oedo is a private botanical island; Haegeumgang is a rock formation offshore.

  • Runs from 8:30 AM
  • Bookable online

Boat and walk are different experiences. With one full day, take the boat in the morning and walk in the afternoon.

Before you go

  • A car makes this much easier. Getting around the island on public transport alone eats a lot of the day
  • Windy Hill is free and open 24 hours. It's a hillside — there's no gate
  • The wind is real. The name isn't decorative. Bring a layer
  • Weather is everything here. The sea in the overcast photo and the sea in the clear one are different colours entirely
  • ✅ Good if you like travel where the walking is the point, you're drawn more to the space between sights than the sights, or you can look at the sea for a long time without getting bored
  • ⚠️ The famous viewpoint is crowded — pick your hour if you want quiet. Without a car, transport will take a real bite out of your day
  • Elsewhere in Gyeongsang — I've also written up Yongwon Hoetjip in Jinhae for its fresh cod soup. It's a real drive from Geoje, so treat it as a separate trip.
Based on a personal visit. Fares and sailing times can change, so anything uncertain is marked (as of Aug 2026).
