I gave up counting the side dishes somewhere past ten plates and just focused on eating them all.

Cheongpung Golden Tteok-galbi — A Chance Find in Jecheon, with a Table Full of Side Dishes

The side dishes fill the table

What actually stays with you is the banchan. Namul, savoury pancakes, pickles, braised dishes, salted seafood, kimchi — a dozen or more side dishes get laid out. Doenjang stew and rice come with it, and you could fill up without the tteok-galbi at all.

I left properly full.

The tteok-galbi itself was a surprise find

I had no idea Jecheon was known for tteok-galbi. I was over near Cheongpung Lake, searched for somewhere to eat nearby, and this is what came up.

Inside, it was busier than I expected. I found it by chance through a search, but it seems to be one of those places the people who know, know.

The tteok-galbi comes as round patties, set on a hot plate over sliced onion. Sesame scattered on top, the outside grilled dark in a soy marinade.

What it looks like

On an oval iron plate, two round tteok-galbi patties sit on a bed of onion, sprinkled with sesame. The plate comes on a wooden stand. Around it are a pot of doenjang stew, a pancake, braised beans, namul, pickles, a stir-fry of shrimp and small fish, a sweet potato dish, stuffed cucumber, pickled onion and a cucumber water kimchi. Each plate holds only a little, but there are so many that the table is packed.

Menu words

  • Tteok-galbi is a dish of minced or ground rib meat, seasoned, shaped into patties and grilled
  • Doenjang-jjigae is a stew cooked with fermented soybean paste
  • Mit-banchan are the small side dishes that are set out by default with a meal

The flavour is faithful to the basics

Nothing about it jumps out. It's faithful to the tteok-galbi flavour you already know — a sweet-and-savoury marinated grill, the soft texture of minced meat. Call it a no-miss version and you'd be right.

There is no heat. The tteok-galbi itself isn't spicy; there's a little in the seasoned vegetables and the kimchi.

For foreign visitors

  • Tteok-galbi is rib meat, chopped, marinated in a sweet soy sauce and grilled. Here it comes as round patties, and it is not spicy.
  • No wrapping or assembly — just cut it and eat it with rice. If you can use chopsticks, you're set.
  • There are a lot of side dishes with the meal. Most are not spicy — mostly namul, pickles and braised things — so even unfamiliar ones are safe to try.
  • It fits a meal near Cheongpung Lake or the Cultural Heritage Complex. It's not a place to travel a long way for on its own.

Who this suits

  • ✅ You need a proper meal during a Jecheon / Cheongpung day
  • ✅ You like a hanjeongsik-style spread with lots of side dishes
  • ✅ You can't eat spicy food — the tteok-galbi isn't spicy
  • ⚠️ You're thinking of coming a long way for this place alone — it isn't that
  • ⚠️ You want one strong main rather than a wide range of side dishes

Before you go

  • Getting there — Cheongpung-myeon, Jecheon, North Chungcheong. Close to Cheongpung Lake and the Cultural Heritage Complex.
  • Hours · closing day — roughly 9:00 AM–8:30/9:00 PM (varies a bit by day), no regular closing day, as of Aug 2026. I didn't check the price — check the map or call before you go.
  • Bundling — it slots in well as lunch on a Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex → Cheongpung Lake cable car itinerary.
  • Staying over? — Cheongpung Resort, just up the road with the lake view, pairs naturally with a night here.
Written up after my own visit. The flavour and the spread are down to personal taste. Hours and closing day are as listed above, and I didn't check the price — check the venue's details once more before you go. Prices and hours are (as of Aug 2026).
